Why should I choose an MTO approved driving Instructor?
There are many schools to choose from. Not all schools or instructors have been through the ministry of transport training, and thus may or may not be able to teach you according to the HTA (Highway Traffic Act) rules and regulations, may not have the suitable vehicle insurance and may not have the safety feature of a dual controlled brake fitted to avoid an accident should the need arise.
What will you learn in Drivers Ed?
You will learn how to effectively and safely operate the vehicle. You will learn all about the different types of intersections and how to navigate through them. You will learn all about defensive driving, hazard awareness techniques and safe driving practices. You will learn some maneuvers like how to turn the car in the road, parallel park. You will also experience driving in different road conditions and through different scenarios where you will learn how to monitor and adapt to what’s going on and how to act in those situations. You will experience different road users and how they behave according to the type of vehicle they are operating. After completing all the steps required, you will be ready to take the G1 exit test.
Beginner Driver Education (BDE)
https://drivetest.ca/tests/resources/beginner-driver-education/
While it is not a requirement for a Class G2 road test, a Ministry of Transportation (MTO) approved beginner driver education (BDE) course is a great idea.
You may be eligible to reduce the time you spend at the Class G1 level if you successfully complete an MTO-approved BDE course with an MTO-licensed school and driving instructor. Completing an MTO-approved BDE course may also provide potential insurance rate discounts.
Be sure to choose a licensed, quality driving school. Schools that are not MTO-approved have no authority to instruct novice drivers.
The course includes
20 hours of Online material -( a minimum of 80% is required in each section test in order to continue to the next step).
10 hours of digital material
10 hours of On-Road tuition.
What does BDE give me?
Completing the bde course allows you to obtain a Ministry of Transport Ontario certificate which may give you between 10-25% off car insurance. Another benefit of taking the course is that you will be able to book your road test after 8 months, instead of waiting the standard 12 months.
How can I study for the Knowledge Test?
Ontario’s Official MTO Driver’s Handbook is a great resource. In addition, many new drivers choose to take a government-approved beginner driver education (BDE) course. These courses are recommended but not required; however, those taking them are eligible to take their Class G2 road test after waiting only 8 months (instead of the usual 12 months). MTO maintains a listing of approved driving schools on their website.
When can I book the G2 road test?
After 8 or 12 months with a Class G1 license, book a road test and then take your Class G2 road test.
For the Class G2 road test, a driver examiner at a DriveTest Centre will assess basic driving skills (e.g., turning left and right, stopping, parking). If you complete a government-approved Beginner Driver Education course, you can take your Class G2 road test after just 8 months. If you do not complete one of these courses, you must practice with your G1 for a minimum of 12 months. If you are successful, you will be issued another temporary driver’s license and will receive a Class G2 license in the mail. If you are unsuccessful, you can try the road test again as long as your G1 license has not expired. If your G1 license has expired, you will have to start all over, including paying the fees.Eligible driver’s license applicants can book a road test appointment online, over the phone, or in person. What happens in the G2 Road test?
https://drivetest.ca/tests/road-tests-cars/
This test assesses basic driving skills, is commonly referred to as a “city test,” and usually takes about 20 minutes. If you are successful, you will be granted a Class G2 license.
If you have never driven before, you will be required to gain one year of driving experience before you qualify for this test. If you take a course at an MTO-recognized driving school, your eligibility requirement may be reduced by four months
What happens after I get G2 license
Practice, practise, practice your driving with your Class G2 license.
The G2 is the second of two graduated licensing learning levels prior to getting a full Class G licence. You must practice with your G2 for 12 months, ensuring that you maintain a zero-blood-alcohol level and that every passenger with you wears a seat belt. With a G2 license, you can now drive independently, without an experienced driver in the car, on all Ontario roads (including 400-series highways and high-speed expressways), and at any time of the day, unless you are 19 or under. If you are 19 years of age or under, you can drive with only one passenger who is 19 years of age or under in your car between midnight and 5 a.m. This condition applies for the first six months of having your G2. After six months, you can have up to three passengers who are 19 or under at that time of night. The condition is waived if you have a fully licensed driver in the car (four or more years of driving experience) or if your passengers are immediate family members (e.g., parent, brother, sister).
What happens in the G road test?
This test assesses more advanced driving skills, includes a highway component, and usually takes about 30 minutes. If you are successful, you will be issued a Class G license.
You will be required to practice driving for at least a year after obtaining your Class G2 license before you qualify for the Class G road test.
What are the vehicle requirements for road test?
https://drivetest.ca/tests/road-test-vehicle-requirements/
If the vehicle you bring to the road test does not meet Ministry of Transportation (MTO) standards for the purpose of a road test — or if there is a non-vehicle-related reason for which the examiner determines that the test cannot be completed — the examiner will declare the road test “out-of-order.”
If your test is declared out-of-order, you lose 50% of your road test fee. The other 50% remains as a credit on your driving record and may be applied when booking a new test. This applies to a vehicle you own and to a vehicle you have borrowed (parent, friend, or driving instructor) or rented. If you have any concerns that your road test may be declared out-of-order, contact the DriveTest Centre before your scheduled road test appointment to discuss it.
Can I take my own vehicle to the Road test?
Yes, you can use your own car, as long as it passes the safety check by the examiner and you have a valid auto insurance policy covering you as a driver.
Can I Cancel Road Test?
You can cancel most road test appointments online using your driver’s licence number and expiry date.
If you must cancel a road test appointment, please notify DriveTest at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled appointment time to avoid forfeiting your road test fee. You will lose your fee if you cancel within 48 hours of your appointment.
If your licence has expired, please note that you cannot cancel or change any road test appointments
What if I fail the Road test?
If you are not successful, you can book another road test in 10 days.

Demerits for G1 and G2 Drivers
According to Demerit-Points.com, each level of driver’s license carries a limit to the number of points that the driver can accumulate. For drivers with Class G1 or G2 licenses who already have four or more demerits, a traffic ticket could result in a thirty-day suspension, while receiving six or more demerits can also result in a thirty-day suspension of driving privileges. For any class of license, including Class G, nine or more points result in an interview with the Ministry of Transportation, and fifteen demerit points bring with them a thirty-day suspension.
